David Bowie makes a guest appearence as a moderator for a "Walk Off".
And that's a good thing. Totally irreverent, ridiculous, and inanely stupid, these attributes are
Zoolander's strengths rather than weaknesses...I can't even find fault in all the (shameless) product
placement, because in this case it's entirely appropriate .I have to admit...during the first 10 minutes
of Zoolander, I had my doubts as to whether this would be the brilliance I knew Ben Stiller was capable
of, or would end up being a skit that goes on 80 minutes longer than it should. The producers of SNL
should take note, 90 minute movies of skits that weren't funny to begin with are over...dead...swimming
with Jimmy Hoffa, see? Once I got to the "Mango Mocha Frappaccino" scene in which Derek Zoolander's
vapid JC Penny model roommates attempt to cheer him up, I knew I was in for a ride, Stiller style.
Where the Austin Powers movies in my opinion failed, Zoolander succeeds. Nothing is milked for every painful snicker.
The plot? The runways of Paris, New York, London, and Milan need the blood of Malaysian sweatshop
workers to stay in business...when a new Malaysian Prime Minister vows to raise living wages, evil
fashion tycoon Mugatu (played wonderfully by Will Ferrell, who for once didn't annoy me), leader of a
S.P.E.C.T.R.E.-style clothing cartel, decides he must find a patsy -a Hilfiger Harvey Oswald if you
will- to assassinate the Malaysian Prime Minister...enter failed model Derek Zoolander, bested by his
modelling rival Hansel (Owen Wilson, awesome as usual) and rejected by his coal miner dad (John Voight!)
...what results is like taking acid and watching t.v. screens displaying the Manchurian Candidate,
Man From U.N.C.L.E., and Batman, all while nurses in uniforms made out of fruit roll-ups administer
nitrous oxide to you...oh wait, that's just a personal fantasy of mine...nevermind. Mmmmm....Milla
Jovovich in fruit rollups...
Go see it...if you don't like it, then we just can't hang, man. All of us folks who were telling you
years ago that the Ben Stiller Show was the funniest thing around are now being vindicated. Oh,
sweet justice!
